Nascetta is a white grape variety grown in Piedmont. Around twenty years ago it was extremely rare but gradually producers are investing in the grape and are celebrating its ability to produce light, fresh white wines with a nutty finish.
The little known Nascetta variety is found in small pockets of Piedmont in north west Italy. Although fairly rare, its plantings have increased over the last 20 years and there are now plenty of producers using Nascetta to make exciting, high quality wines. Mainly grown around the town of Novello, this white grape was on the edge of extinction until a handful of producers such as Valter Fissore and Elvio Cogno endeavoured to bring it back. In the mid 90s there was not a single vineyard given over exclusively to Nascetta. Anyone who wished to plant it would have to select cuttings from random rows in vineyards planted with other varieties. Anna Maria Abbona, just outside the village of Dogliani has also planted Nascetta in 2007 and have begun to produce both a still and a charmat expression of the grape.
