The Refosco Nostrano is a red grape variety grown in Friuli-Venezia Giulia in north east Italy. It is a member of the Refosco grape family, which has achieved most recognition for the Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. Although its origin remains elusive, historical records place the earliest mentions of Refosco Nostrano in the villages of Torreano and Faedis in the province of Udine.
About
Also known as Refosco di Faedis and Refoscone, according to the national grape variety registry, it thrives predominantly within the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. Once a prominent variety in the area, its widespread cultivation was driven by its remarkable productivity. However, over time, it has been gradually overshadowed by more esteemed variations of the Refosco grape, regarded as more "noble." The grapes of Refosco Nostrano yield medium to large black berries with an almost oval contour. Their skin boasts a notably waxy texture and displays a deep bluish-black hue. The clusters are medium to large, shaped like pyramids or cylinders, elongated, and occasionally winged. These clusters are fairly compact, adorned with medium-sized, rounded, three-lobed, or five-lobed leaves. From the Refosco Nostrano grapes emerges a wine of profound ruby red color, accompanied by a slightly herbaceous aroma and notes of dried plum and blackberry. The palate experience is characterized by a tangy and astringent profile, occasionally assertive, yet endowed with a substantial body and well-defined tannins.
