Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a white grape variety grown around the town of San Gimignano in Tuscany. At its best, it gives dry and structured wines that work well with food.
Vernaccia is a difficult grape variety to cultivate, to the point where it's fairly obvious why it didn't take off in other areas of Tuscany. Its thin skins make it prone to sun burn during very hot, sunny periods. When there is more humidity Vernaccia is prone to fungal diseases and rot. Managing the canopy is arguably the most important vineyard work.
