Ownership & People
The winery is a cooperative made up of around 200 member growers. It was founded in 1959 by 19 growers from the villages of Vinchio and Vaglio Serra. The winery is governed collectively, with technical support provided to members for vineyard management and harvesting.
03
History
Cantina Vinchio Vaglio was established in 1959 to support growers farming steep hillside vineyards. The cooperative aimed to improve wine quality, winemaking capacity, and market access. Over time, it expanded its membership, modernised its facilities, and increased production, while maintaining a focus on traditional grape varieties and regional styles.
04
Location
The winery is based in the villages of Vinchio and Vaglio Serra in the province of Asti, Piedmont. The vineyards are located in the Alto Monferrato zone, an area of hilly terrain with varied soils. Most vineyards are on steep slopes with good exposure. The region lies within the Barbera d’Asti DOCG and Barbera del Monferrato DOC designations.
05
Vineyards & Viticulture
Member growers farm vineyards in Vinchio, Vaglio Serra, and nearby communes including Nizza Monferrato, Incisa Scapaccino, Cortiglione, and Mombercelli. Most vineyards are on slopes and worked manually. Barbera accounts for approximately 70 percent of vineyard area. Other grapes include Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Grignolino, Freisa, Ruché, Cortese, Arneis, Moscato, Brachetto, Bonarda, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and Pinot Nero. Sustainable farming practices are encouraged, and vineyard work is coordinated with technical oversight from the cooperative.
06
Winemaking
All grapes are brought to a central winemaking facility in Vinchio. Fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Some wines are aged in oak barrels. Winemaking is standardised across the cooperative to ensure consistency and quality. The winery follows protocols designed to preserve varietal character and regional identity. Quality certification and sustainability systems are in place.
07
